Where did it Begin?
Born in 1964 in Mount Airey, Clarendon, Jamaica, Dennis “Coptic” Reeves embarked on his musical journey at just six years old, mastering the banjo, followed by the guitar, both self-taught. Throughout his early years, he captivated audiences in Jamaica through school events and local concerts.
Early Life and Musical Influences
At just 18, Dennis Reeves moved to Canada, where his musical journey flourished. In 1984, he became a co-founder and rhythm guitarist for the Inspiration Band, marking the beginning of his recording career at Spectrum Recording Studio. From 1984 to 1987, Dennis expanded his repertoire as a member of the Future Shock Band, performing a wide range of musical genres and captivating audiences at concerts and nightclubs across Canada.
In 1987, Dennis founded the United Groove Band, where he showcased his skills as a rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist, captivating audiences at numerous performances. By 1996, he established the High Energy Band, collaborating with renowned artists such as Everton Blender, Louie Culture, and King Shadrock.
Career Highlights
Dennis’s career is filled with memorable moments demonstrating his musical prowess and staying power in the roots reggae genre. In 1993, he performed at the Jamaican Canadian Association, Bob Marley Celebration, a milestone event in his career. Over the years, he has performed at some of Toronto’s most prestigious venues, including Massey Hall, Molson Amphitheatre and participated in key events such as Jamaica Day Celebration and the 2003 Canada Have a Voice Showcase.
Ongoing Projects and Influence
Currently, Dennis is preparing to release his highly anticipated second album on the Coptic Sound Studio label. The indie sophomore Rubbles Riddim album, released in 2011 features various artists, with popular songs such as Good Morning Sunshine, The System and Respect Jah are some of the album’s standout singles. For Dennis, music is more than just a career; it’s an inseparable part of his life that he will never leave behind. His strong connection to his audience and deep innerstanding of the roots reggae genre remains central to his work. He is also committed to mentoring younger artists, helping to foster a new generation of talent in the reggae world.
From Little Jamaica Village to Jane-Finch
After co-creating roots reggae bands for about twenty years and supporting numerous Jamaican and Canadian artists, Dennis and his band members took a break to focus on independently building CSS. CSS has since produced and released one of the largest collections of Toronto indie artists, featured on the Rubbles album.
Sound system owners from the Jane-Finch area were regular patrons of the record stores in Little Jamaica Village. These stores, along with musicians, sound system operators, businesses, singers, deejays, disc jockeys, music venues, promoters, media, and the local community, helped create a strong economic foundation for the area. They supplied Jane-Finch soundmen with hot, freshly released records from Jamaica. CSS has become an international ambassador of roots reggae music, working with other musicians, recording studios, artists, and industry professionals.
The early development of roots reggae along Eglinton Avenue West has become an integral part of the cultural fabric of Tkaronto (Toronto), Ontario, and Canada (Kanata).
A Legacy of Collaboration and Innovation
In addition to his independent solo achievements, Dennis co-created four bands and has been a prominent live performer for over four decades. He is the driving force behind CSS (Coptic Sound Studio), through which he has composed an extensive collection of riddims and helped numerous indie artists find their voices. There are plans to release a new album from Coptic Sound Studio’s impressive catalogue.
His dedication and impact on the reggae scene culminated in earning the prestigious Canadian Reggae Music Award for Best Reggae Band in 2000. Following years of live performances, Dennis expanded his focus to music production, channelling his creative vision through Coptic Sound Studio.
Dennis’s success is deeply rooted in his core principles of commitment, self-determination, unity, family, and collaboration. These values have been essential in his long-lasting contribution to Toronto’s (Tkaronto’s) roots reggae scene.
